Is there anything better than, warm and sunny weather, crystal clear streams, with a good trout population, your fly fishing gear on, the rod in your hands?
It might sound too good to be true, however in Spain all this can easily be realised. No wonder so many fly fishers have gotten hooked on fly fishing in Catalonia. Ernest Hemingway was one of them.
Barcelona Fly Fishing was founded in Spain by Mikael Lilliestrom originally from Finland. He lives permanently in Spain and is up to date with both fishing and local conditions. Customised service for the client/clients according to their wishes.
Where?
Barcelona Flyfishing is located in the northeastern part of Catalonia in Saint Feliu de Guíxols, about an hours drive from the Barcelona Airport to the accommodation. The fishing is done in several cold and clear streams in the Pyrenees.
Most of the places are close by and easily reached by foot.
For customers who do not fish, the area offers a variety of things to do. For example water sports, hiking, historical sites and of course nightlife to mention a few.
When?
The Fishing season in Spain is open around the year.
Most of the fly fishers finds that both autumn and winter are the best time of the year for fishing in Spain.
However fish can still be found during spring and summer in cooler waters.

What to catch?
The most common ones are brown and rainbow trout. They are mostly wild as fish transplanting is very rare in Spain in comparison to many other countries in Europe.
There is some barbel and zebra trout, however they are hard to find and very skittish.
Since fishing follows the catch and release principle and rules, only barbless hooks are allowed.
The fish is released directly after a quick scaling and if possible a quick photo shoot.
With fine guiding and good skills, there is a great chance to catch a nice sized fish thanks to long C&R tradition and excellent environment.
Fly fishing styles
There are basically two fly fishing styles used in Spain. The most common one is called Euro Nymphing with many of its variations. In case you are not familiar with this increasingly popular option, it will offer you an exiting and effective way to fish. For experienced fly fishermen it takes just a few minutes to learn the basics and then continue to deepen the knowledge of the secret day after day.
Another way is dry fly fishing, which usually used when fishing in still waters or very slow streams. Dry flies used in Spain are typically very small with a hook size from 18-20.
In some places streamers are also allowed, offering a somewhat more traditional way for fly fishing. The streamers which are used are also quite small with hooks sized between 6-8.
Gear
The equipment needed for euro nymphing technique, class 2 or 4 should be approximate 10 feet long.
Casts are short, so fly line is not critical, if at all needed. Between tippet and fly , there is an indicator line which is needed when pointing casts upstream. Waders are needed all year around. In summer they especially they should be light, as even short walks can get extremely warm/hot. Boots should have hard soles, spikes are recommended due to slippery rocks in some areas.
Polarised sunglasses, wading equipment, backpack or bag for snacks and drinks.
